Suhr Serial Number5/10/2021

![]() Its got custom specs compared to the standard Pro Moderns, like the Guthri Govan neck and HSH configuration. My model is Swamp Ash with a Maple neck and top and a Gotoh Floyd bridge. Strangely enough, it also doesnt have the Pro designation on the headstock, but rather a typical Suhr serial number. And its easily one of the brightest and best sounding guitars in my collection. But Ive been finding over the years that I am liking low-output humbuckers more and more (in that vein, Pete Thorn and I are pretty much on the same page). Not because Im not playing heavy music, but rather because most high-output humbuckers seem to muddy up the tone in a ways I dont like. I tend to dig clarity and top-end presence, and I havent played a high output (17K) pickup yet that didnt roll off the highs and muddy the lows, regardless of amp and settings. The SSH that originally came in the bridge of this Modern was no exception. Suhr Full In ThisWhile it certainly didnt sound bad, I found the SSH was too round and a bit sloppy sounding with the volume on full in this guitar. ![]() The top-end isnt shrill in this guitar, either, which I was a little worried about since Pete Thorn tends to be seen playing mahogany guitars. It really cuts and has an incredible rock snarl when distorted, while keeping a bit of country twang clean. It will still distort some of my clean patches on my Axe FX II when you dig into the strings, but nowhere near like the SSH. It also sounds acceptably good in the 2 position mixed with the Suhr ML in the middle position. Its not as good as the 2 position in my Pro S, which has a V60LP in the middle that I like better for that position than the ML since its got a little more low-end girth, which is good to have IMHO in a middle position single coil. But it will give you some passable Strat quack for those funk grooves. Its pretty much exactly what I was looking for to take my Modern to the next level (for me). One word of caution for folks with Moderns and other direct-mount pickup guitars; Suhr drilled slightly larger holes for the direct mount pickups in this guitar, which required me to drill out the stock screw holes on the Thornbucker to get it to mount properly. I found this out when comparing to the original SSH, which also has holes large enough so the mounting screws pass through without threading. Its an easy mod, but it will pretty much make it impossible to mount on a pickup ring in the future without a larger screw size. Im not sure if my guitar was simply a one-off, or if all Moderns are like this, but I figured Id throw out a word of warning.
